The endocrine system is made up of glands that produce hormones which regulate various bodily functions. The glands include the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, adrenal glands, pancreas, and ovaries/testes. The hormones they produce are released into the bloodstream and travel to target cells to carry out their functions.

One imbalance or disease of the endocrine system is diabetes. It occurs when the pancreas is unable to produce enough insulin, a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. This can result in high blood sugar levels, which can cause damage to organs and tissues over time.

Diabetes can be treated with medication, lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise, and insulin therapy. However, it cannot be cured, and individuals with diabetes must manage their condition for their entire life.
