This is an arithmetic sequence with a first term of 1, a common difference of 1, and a last term of 499. We can use the formula for the sum of an arithmetic series to find the sum of the numbers:

S = (n/2)(a1 + an)

where:

S = sum of the series

n = number of terms

a1 = first term

an = last term

Substituting the given values, we get:

S = (499/2)(1 + 499)

S = (249.5)(500)

S = 124,750

So the sum of the series 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + ... + 498 + 499 is 124,750.
