  • Cold freezes the cells in a plant, causing damage and interrupts the pathways for nutrients and water to flow. In small branches and twigs, the living xylem is much more affected by cold than the cambium and phloem.
  • Low temperatures can affect plants in several ways. First, temperatures near the minimum for plant growth will reduce the plant's rate of metabolism and growth. If the temperature, and therefore the metabolism, remain low for an extended period, plant quality will suffer, and death may occur.
