The best way to define a real number is to look at the converse. What is not a real number

Imaginary numbers such as
√(-1) , √(-10) etc are not real numbers
Infinity is not a real number

All other numbers can be considered real
Such as -1, 3, 3.14, 22/7,
√(2), 1/3(=0.3333....)
