The Rana Rule was established by the Rana dynasty in Nepal in the mid-19th century. The Rana dynasty was founded by Jung Bahadur Rana in 1846 after he seized power in a coup. The Rana rule lasted until 1951 when a popular movement led to the overthrow of the Rana dynasty and the establishment of a constitutional monarchy in Nepal. During the Rana rule, the country was largely closed off from the outside world and Nepal remained isolated until the mid-20th century.
