Which blood type(s) could Jessalyn receive, why?

Case Study
Jessalyn regularly goes in for blood transfusions. Jessalyn's blood type is A-. Normally her blood transfusions go well and her nurse, Traci, does a great job of double checking the blood type she is receiving. This time Traci is out of town and she gets a nurse who was able to skate through school doing the bare minimum and doesn't really care that much about his job. He doesn't double check the blood type for her transfusion and . . .The blood type was incorrect.

Answer: Jessalyn can only receive blood from a donor who is blood type A- or O-.

Explanation: Jessalyn has blood type A-, which means that she has A antigens on her red blood cells and no Rh factor. According to the ABO blood typing system, people with blood type A can receive blood from donors with blood types A and O, but not from donors with blood types B or AB. According to the Rh blood typing system, people who are Rh-negative (like Jessalyn) can receive blood from donors who are Rh-negative or Rh-positive, but people who are Rh-positive can only receive blood from donors who are also Rh-positive.

Therefore, Jessalyn can only receive blood from a donor who is blood type A- or O-. She cannot receive blood from a donor who is blood type B, AB, or A+ or any other positive type. It's important to double check blood types during transfusions to avoid potentially life-threatening situations like in this case.
