Explanation:

In order to find the shaded area it is just the bigger square taking away the smaller square. This is simply because of the fact that if the bigger square was all shaded then you add in a smaller square the shaded region is the whole thing not including the smaller square. Then if you were to solve for it you would do 8.5 * 8.5 as that is the area of the square. This would equal to 72.25 then you would want to take away the smaller square. The smaller square area is 6 * 6 which is squal to 36. Then to find the area of the shaded region all you do is bigger square take away smaller square which is 72.25-36 which is equal to 36.25.
