1500 = amount he sold

commission = 1500· 16% = 1500 · 16 = 240

Change 16% to a decimal by dropping the % sign and moving decimal

two places to the left - 16% becomes .16.

Equation is

575 = 20x + .16(1500)

575 = 20x + 240

575 - 240 = 20x + 240 - 240

335 = 20x

divide both sides by 20

335/20 = 20x /20

16.75 = x

so 16.75 is his hourly rate
