The everglades in Florida have been necessary to plants and animals for thousands of years. Humans arrived on the Florida peninsula approximately 15,000 years ago. At this time, the people hunted large megafauna that slowly started to go extinct around 6500 years ago. The climate in the area changed substantially. It became much wetter. This caused some of the larger animals to go extinct. The people, however, remained and adapted.
The Glades peoples developed into two distinct groups, the Calusa and Tequesta. Spanish explorers landed in Florida in 1564 and slowly began settling in the area. During this period, the Calsua and Tequesta populations declined by the thousands. They died from diseases and attacks from the new Spanish inhabitants. Many were relocated to the Florida Keys. By the early 1800s, the native population had been transformed into a new culture. They became known as the Seminole people. They formed out of what remained of the tribes that had inhabited different regions in the Florida peninsula.
Conflicts between the Seminole and American colonialists began in the early 1800s. Colonialists battled the Seminole for control over the land. Florida became a U.S. territory in 1821, but land conflicts continued. The Second Seminole War broke out in 1835 and continued until 1842. The Seminole lost. The U.S. forced 3,000 Seminole people into an Indian Territory in Oklahoma, but some Seminole remained in the everglades. Eventually, after further conflict, the U.S. decided to leave the remaining Seminole alone. Land developers began development in the early 1900s. In 1957 the federal government officially recognized the Seminole as the Seminole Tribe of Florida.
