Answer: a = 3

Explanation:

5a - 17 = 10 +9 - 7a

Add together 10 and 9

5a - 17 = 19 - 7a

add 7a to both sides

5a + 7a - 17 = 19 - 7a + 7a

12a - 17 = 19

Add 17 to both sides

12a - 17 + 17 = 19 + 17

12a = 36

Divide both sides by 12

12a/12 = 36/12

a = 3

Explanation:

The variable is a

What we can do is get all numbers on one side of the equal sign, and all number/variable combinations on the other side

5a - 17 = 10 + 9 - 7a

10 + 9 is 19

Adding 17 to both sides makes 19+17= 36

5a = 36 - 7a

Now we can add 7a to both sides to complete it.

12a = 36

Lastly we can divide by 12 to both sides

a = 3
