Slaves reacted to apprenticeship in a variety of ways. Firstly, some slaves used it as an opportunity to improve their lives, as it provided them with the chance to learn valuable skills which could lead to better job prospects. Secondly, some slaves viewed it as an opportunity to gain greater independence from their masters, as it allowed them to negotiate the terms of their apprenticeship and gave them more autonomy than they had previously. Thirdly, some slaves viewed it as a way of exercising a form of resistance, as it provided them with a platform to challenge oppressive systems and demonstrate their ability to create their own opportunities.
