y = - x - 10 → (1)

x² + y - 2 = 0 → (2)

substitute y = - x - 10 into (2)

x² - x - 10 - 2 = 0

x² - x - 12 = 0 ← in standard form

(x - 4)(x + 3) = 0 ← in factored form

equate each factor to zero and solve for x

x + 3 = 0 ⇒ x = - 3

x - 4 = 0 ⇒ x = 4
