India gained its independence from the United Kingdom, also known as Great Britain, on August 15, 1947. Prior to this, India had been a colony of the British Empire for over 200 years, with the British East India Company establishing control over parts of India in the 18th century and the British Crown taking over the administration of India from the company in 1858.
