Scientists discovered that all living things are made of cells by using microscopes to observe the structure of plants and animals. Pasteur's experiment with the flasks showed that when the flask had an intact neck, no living organisms appeared in the flask, but when the neck was broken, living organisms appeared. This demonstrated that living organisms cannot come from nonliving things. Nutrients are needed for living things as they provide energy and building blocks for cells to grow and reproduce. Nonliving things, such as rocks or water, do not need nutrients to survive. Living things contain cells, which are capable of reproduction, growth, and metabolism, whereas nonliving things do not possess these characteristics
