The main difference between the rhythm of Shakespeare's poetry and the free verse written by most of today's poets is that Shakespeare relied on the repetition of lines for emphasis unlike most poets of today. Free-verse poetry doesn't rhyme at all, instead, it tends to follow the rhythm of natural speech.

Shakespeare rhymes his lyric poetry. His popular sonnets are all rhyming poems.
