Mouth: The mouth is responsible for the initial mechanical and chemical digestion of food, with the help of teeth and saliva, respectively.
Esophagus: The esophagus is a muscular tube that connects the mouth to the stomach and serves to transport food from the mouth to the stomach.
Stomach: The stomach is responsible for further mechanical and chemical digestion of food, as well as the release of enzymes and acids that break down the food into a liquid mixture called chyme.
Small intestine: The small intestine is the site of most of the nutrient absorption, where the chyme is mixed with digestive enzymes from the pancreas and bile from the liver and gallbladder to break down and absorb nutrients from food.
Large intestine: The large intestine absorbs water and electrolytes from the remaining chyme, and forms it into solid feces that can be eliminated through the rectum and anus.
