Alizah is comparing the prices of two apple orchards. At the first orchard, it costs $30 to rent a basket for collecting apples, and every pound of apples collected costs $5. At the second orchard, baskets are free, but the apples cost $20 per pound. How many pounds of apples would Alizah need to collect at each orchard for their costs to be the same?

Answer:

2 lb

Explanation:

Let x = number of pounds

Let c = cost

first orchard:

it costs $30 to rent a basket

pound of apples collected costs $5

c = 5x + 30

second orchard:

baskets are free

apples cost $20 per pound

c = 20x

We want the costs to be equal.

20x = 5x + 30

15x = 30

x = 2

Answer: 2 lb
