Answer:

2 drinks, 10 pretzels

Explanation:

d = # of drinks

p = # of pretzels

1) d + p = 12

2) $6d + $3.25p = $44.50

solve equation 1 for d: d = 12 - p substitute this into equation 2 and solve for p

6(12 - p) + 3.25p = 44.50

72 - 6p + 3.25p = 44.50

-2.75p = 44.50 - 72

-2.75p = -27.50

p = -27.50/-2.75 = 10 plug this into equation 1 and solve for d

d = 12 - 10 = 2

double check the answers: 6(2) + 3.25(10) = 44.50 correct!
