In chapter 1 of the book A Single Shard, Tree-ear was not stealing when he took the rice from the man carrying the jiggeh. Tree-ear was an orphan and he was hungry, but he had no money to buy food. He saw the man carrying the jiggeh and the rice, and he thought that he could take some rice without being caught. He took only a few grains of rice, and he did not take the jiggeh. However, he was caught by the man, who hit him with a stick and took his shirt as punishment. Tree-ear felt guilty and ashamed for what he did, but he was also desperate and hungry.
