direct speech is indicated by inverted commas or quotation marks around the words spoken by a character. The punctuation marks (question marks, full stops and exclamation marks) go inside the inverted commas. A new speaker needs a new line and a capital letter at the start of each piece of speech12. Based on these rules, the correct sentence is d) “Did you eat the last piece of cake?” Dave asked.
