During a sale, a customer bought 5 shirts and 4 hats and spent $160.00. Another customer bought

3 shirts and 2 hats and spent $90.00. What are the prices of one shirt and one hat?

Shirts = x Hats = y

5x + 4y=160 (1)

3x + 2y=90 (2)

Multiply (2) with 2 and you have 6x+4y=180 (3)

Then subtract (1) from (3) and you have 6x-5x +4y -4y = 20

=> x = 20 $ a shirt

Go back to (2) to find y

3*20 +2y = 90 => 2y = 30 => y = 15$ a hat
