Considering the Critical Race Theory Lens and all you've watched and read from I Am Not Your Negro, do you think we've advanced in regards to Civil Rights since Baldwin's time? Why or why not? Do you think Baldwin would see improvement?

(Use CRT terms in your response)

Answer:

Well, I don’t know CRT terms and it’s been some years since I’ve watched the documentary, but it’s fair to say that society has evolved since then, yet I wouldn’t say it has advanced very far. While Baldwin lived in a time where tings such as lynchings, segregation, and discrimination were accepted and encouraged, it can be argued that the same is still true to day, although not as boldly. We like to think that Civil Rights are a war of the far past, but it happened very recently and is still happening today, just not as widespread. Black people are still lynched, not just by backwoods Klan members but also by police officers. Peaceful protests are still turned bloody because the people in “authority” have itchy trigger fingers and an aching to beat protestors. Black people still face school and work-place discrimination and hostility. The only difference is that it’s largely subliminal because no one wants to be called racist. So racist individuals use micro-aggressions and gaslighting to antagonize people of color. Still, when it comes to things such as military force, police forces, and prison systems, it’s all very similar to the cruelty of Baldwin’s time, especially since the height of the Civil Rights movement is only decades ago. So, yes, society has changed, as every society does, but it has not advanced as much as most would prefer to believe.
