We wake up when the sun’s asleep
and hear our sister’s quiet feet.
She’s in the kitchen, there’s the light.
We smell the sweets we made last night:
Raisins, butter, saffron—sneeze!—
Lucia Buns in twos and threes.
Electric candles in a crown,
a red sash, and a white gown.
At sunrise, Santa Lucia comes
and brings breakfast to everyone
