Answer:

v = 5

Explanation:

Given figure is a right triangle with side having length v as hypotenuse

By the Pythagorean theorem
hypotenuse² = sum of squares of the other two sides

Given hypotenuse = v

one side = 3 and other side = v - 1

we get

v² = 3² + (v - 1)²

3² = 9

(v - 1)² = v² - 2v + 1² = v² - 2v + 1

Plugging these in we get
v² = 9 + v² - 2v + 1

v² = v² -2v + 10

We can eliminate v² by subtracting v² from both sides:
0 = -2v + 10

Add 2v to both sides:
0 + 2v = -2v + 2v + 10

2v = 10

v = 10/2 = 5

Answer:

v = 5
