There are two main types of metamorphic rocks: those that are foliated because they have formed in an environment with either directed pressure or shear stress, and those that are not foliated because they have formed in an environment without directed pressure or relatively near the surface with very little pressure at all. Some types of metamorphic rocks, such as quartzite and marble, which also form in directed-pressure situations, do not necessarily exhibit foliation because their minerals (quartz and calcite respectively) do not tend to show alignment

One type of metamorphic rock is slate. Slate is a fine-grained, foliated rock that is created through the metamorphism of shale. It has a uniform texture and is composed mainly of clay minerals, such as illite, kaolinite, and smectite.

I like slate because of its versatility. It can be easily split into thin, flat sheets, which makes it ideal for use as a roofing material, flooring, or even as a writing surface (hence the term "slate board"). The flat, uniform nature of the rock also makes it an attractive option for use as decorative pieces, such as in countertops, or as a building material. Additionally, the fact that it is made from shale, a sedimentary rock, adds to its appeal, as it shows the transformative power of metamorphism.
