Patterns of stars in constellations hardly change in appearance over times of even a few thousand

Constellations are formed by stars that are very far away from each other, and the light from these stars takes a long time to reach us. Therefore, the stars in constellations appear to us as they did thousands of years ago, and their patterns remain unchanged.
