The Republic of Peru borders the Pacific Ocean. It is north of Chile and south of Ecuador and Colombia. It's the third largest country in South America. Within it we find three main areas: the coast, which includes Lima, the capital city; the mountains, since the Andes Mountains cross through the country; and tropical jungles, including part of the Amazon. The Amazon region is the largest of the three but the coastal area is the most populated, with a third of the population living in the country's capital city. The weather varies according to the terrain
In each region one can find a variety of animals and plants, some of them unique to Peru. Many animals and plants still have not been classified. Among the fauna (animals) we find vicuñas, chinchillas, condors, turtles, cougars, alligators, parrots, and many more.
One of the peculiarities of the country is that 45% of the population is of indigenous descent, among the highest percentages in Latin America. The Inca civilization, one of the largest and most advanced indigenous civilizations at the time of Spanish arrival, resided in Peru
