A chef has two dozen meatballs to add to a pot of sauce. Each meatball has a two-inch diameter. Before the meatballs are added, the sauce is 2 inches from the top of the 14-inch diameter pot. Will the sauce spill over when the chef adds the meatballs to the pot? Show all of your work to justify your answer.

Answer: The sauce will not spill over

Volume of empty space in the pot:


\pir² * h =
\pi * (14/2)² * 2 = 98
\pi (in³)

Total volume of meatball that will be added:

24 meatballs; each 2 inch diameter >>> 1 inch radius

each meatball has 4/3
\pir³ volume = 4/3
\pi in³

Total meatball volume = 24 * 4/3
\pi in³ = 32
\pi in³

there will be 66
\pi in³ left even after adding the meatballs in the pot.

The sauce will not spill over
