Selective attention is the process of focusing on a particular stimulus while filtering out other stimuli. It is an active, conscious process that requires effort and focus. In contrast, habituation is an unconscious process in which a person learns to ignore a stimulus after it has been repeatedly presented. Habituation is more of an adaptation to the environment, whereas selective attention requires more effort and focus.
