To find the total yield of pumpkins in the two fields you must add the the 2 mixed numbers of the smaller yields.

3(2)/(5)+2(1)/(12)

convert the mixed numbers into fractions by mutiplying the denominator with the whole number and adding the numerator, to find the numerator. the denominator stays the same

3(2)/(5)=((3\cdot5)+2)/(5)=(17)/(5)
2(1)/(12)=((12\cdot2)+1)/(12)=(25)/(12)

add both fractions together

(17)/(5)+(25)/(12)=(17\cdot12+25\cdot5)/(12\cdot5)=(204+125)/(60)=(329)/(60)

convert into a mixed number

(329)/(60)=5(29)/(60)

The total yield of pumpkins is

5(29)/(60)\text{tons of pumpkin}
