The right triangle has one-half the wing span as a leg.

The hypotenuse is 5.8cm and the other leg is 3cm

If we let the unknown leg of the triangle be x, by the Pythagorean theorem we know the sum of the squares of the two legs must be equal to the square of the hypotenuse .

So

x² + 3² = 5.8²

x² = 5.8² - 3²

= 33.64-9

= 24.64

x = √24.64

= 4.96

Total wingspan = 4.96 × 2 = 9.9 cm
