Colorado has a lot of limestone because of a variety of geological processes and environmental factors that occurred millions of years ago. About 100 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous period, shallow, warm waters covered a large portion of what is now Colorado. Due to these favourable conditions, huge quantities of marine animals, including coral and shells, which are the main constituents of limestone, were able to accumulate and be preserved. Massive beds of limestone were created throughout time as a result of the compacting and cementing of silt from these oceans. Geological processes like faulting and erosion raised and exposed these limestone deposits in some locations, making them accessible for mining and construction usage.
