g = number of girls

2g = twice the number of girls

2g+5 = add on 5 to the previous value

2g+5 = number of boys

-------------------

Since there are 89 students we can say

girls + boys = 89 total

g + (2g+5) = 89

3g+5 = 89

3g = 89-5

3g = 84

g = 84/3

g = 28 is the number of girls

2g+5 = 2*28+5 = 61 is the number of boys

Check: girls+boys = 28+61 = 89 total, so it confirms the correct count for each.
