Answer:

x = 7

y = 1

Explanation:

x -5y = 2

x + y = 8

Times the second equation by -1

x - 5y = 2

-x + -y = -8

-6y = -6

y = 1

Now, put 1 back in for y to solve for x

x -5(1) = 2

x - 5 = 2

x = 7

Let's check

7 -5(1) = 2

7 - 5 = 2

2 = 2

So, x = 7 and y = 1 is the correct answer!

Explanation:

BY SUSTITUTION METHOD

Derive an equation from equation 1

x-5y =2. . . 1

x+y=8 . . . 2

to derive another equation make x the subject

from equation 1

x=2+5y. . . 3

now you substitute it in equation 2

2+5y+y=8

collect like terms

5y+y=8-2

6y=6

divide both sides by 6

6y/6=6/6

y=1

now you can substitute y=1 into any equation of your choice I choose equation 3

x=2+5y. when y=1

x=2+5(1)

x=2+5

x=7

Y=1 and x=7
