2x + 5y = 17

2x + 5(3x) = 17

So, instead of the y, you’d use 3x. After, you can multiply the 5 and the 3:

2x + 15x = 17

Because 2x and 15x both have x, you can combine them:

17x = 17

And finally, you can divide!

17/17 = 1

x = 1

After that, you just replace “x” with 1 in either equation to get y. The second is simpler, so that’s what I’ve used here.

y = 3x

y = 3(1)

y = 3

Therefore, your answer is (1, 3).
