By perimeter we mean the sum of all the side lengths of the figure.

By question , we have each side length as x ,

So its perimeter would be ,

x + x + x = 3x

But it is given that the perimeter is 16in . So they must be equal .

Hence our required equation is ,

16 = 3x

and if we want to solve out for x , divide both the sides by 3 ,

x = 16/3

and we are done!
