During the Great Depression, African Americans were disproportionately affected due to racial discrimination. They were the first to be laid off from their jobs and suffered greater hardship than other groups. This period also saw the Great Migration, where approximately six million Black people moved from the South to northern cities in search of better opportunities. The stock market crash of 1929 marked the beginning of the Great Depression, which did not abate until the end of the 1930s. In Congress, African Americans began to be elected in 1870 and by 2007 there were first-term Black-American Members of the 110th Congress.
