A farmer takes 250 chickens to be sold at a market. In the first hour he sells 8% of his chickens. In the second hour he sells 10% of those that were left. What percentage of the original number did he manage to sell in the two hours?​

In the first hour:

The farmer sells 8% of the total chickens:


= (8)/(100)×
250

= 20 chickens

Therefore, the number of chickens left are:

= (250 - 20) chickens

= 230 chickens

In the second hour:

The farmer sells 10% of the chickens left:

(10)/(100)×
230

= 23 chicken

∴ The total number of chickens sold in the two hours = (20 + 23) chickens

= 43 chickens

43 has to be expressed as a percentage of the original number (i.e. 250)
