When the Civil War began, a lot of women offered their services to the cause. They performed a range of tasks, including cooking, nursing, and front-line combat.

To aid both Union and Confederate soldiers, women established aid clubs. For the troops, they did washing, made uniforms, blankets, and socks, planted gardens, canned food, and cooked.
