Answer:

x should be 8 and FG should be 7

Explanation:

Considering segment EF and FG look relatively the same in length, let's assume 2(x-5) = 7.

And assuming both segments are equal to 7, the total would be 14.

3x-12=14

add 12 to 14 which would get you 26

3x=26

divide 26 by 3

which would be 8.666 repeating which for the sake of this we'll round down to 8

check with 2(x-5)

2x-10=7

add 10 to 7

17/2 should equal 8.5 which we'll round down to 8

take this with a grain of salt as I don't know much about college math

Answer:

x = 9, FG = 8

Explanation:

The question depends on the relationship EF + FG = EG (the two shorter segments add up to the long segment).

7 + 2(x - 5) = 3(x - 4)

7 + 2x - 10 = 3x - 12

-3 + 2x = 3x - 12

-3 = x - 12

9 = x

The length FG can be found by substituting 9 for x.

FG = 2(x - 5) = 2(9 - 5) = 2(4) = 8
