How you would you explain that simpler, smaller forms of life are found lower in the geologic column and larger, lower, more complex life forms are found higher up

The geologic time scale divides up the history of the earth based on life-forms that have existed during specific times since the creation of the planet. These divisions are called geochronologic units (geo: rock, chronology: time).

Life is coeternal with matter and has no beginning; life arrived on Earth at the time of Earth's origin or shortly thereafter. Life arose on the early Earth by a series of progressive chemical reactions. Such reactions may have been likely or may have required one or more highly improbable chemical events.
