Albinism, a genetic abnormality which is inherited as a recessive trait, is characterized by a lack of melanin (skin pigment) production. A normal person marries a known carrier for albinism. What is the probability of their having an albino child?

Answer:

It all depends on whether you AND your wife carry an albinism gene. If the two of you do, then each child has a 1 in 4 chance of having albinism. If only one or neither of you is a carrier, then each child has pretty close to a zero chance for albinism. To end up with albinism you need to inherit it from both parents.
