Answer:it gave him arrogance and cockiness. Or More confidence in his abilities.

Explanation:the pirates could have easily killed him. They were “savages” in his eyes and the eyes of the world, but they didn’t kill him because of his status. They kidnapped him and although they could have hurt him and treating him badly, they chose to “be humanly merciful” to him because of who he was.
