Senator Henry Cabot Lodge of Massachusetts was one of the most vocal opponents of the Treaty of Versailles in the United States. He particularly opposed the provisions of the treaty related to the League of Nations. Lodge believed that the League would erode American sovereignty and limit the country's ability to act in its interests. He also believed that the League was too closely tied to the victorious Allies and would not be effective in preventing future wars. As a result, Lodge led the opposition to the treaty in the Senate and helped prevent the U.S. from ratifying it.
