The majority of nematode (Canine Heartworm) growth occurs in the pulmonary artery and right side of the heart. The worms are transmitted to the host through the bite of an infected mosquito and migrate to the heart and lungs where they mature and reproduce. They can cause damage to the blood vessels and heart leading to heart failure and lung disease.
