The outsiders is a good book, I'd recommend it as its pretty short and a nice read. With that being said:

This paragraph describes how alienated Ponyboy feels from others in an environment unlike his own. Despite his intelligence and quick thinking, he doesn't feel as though he belongs with the socs simply because he thinks differently. In order to solve a problem, he first resorts to violence (a metaphor for how many greasers tend to deal with problems) instead of asking for a sharper knife which surprises the girl. She unknowingly confirms that Ponyboy is an "outsider" (no pun intended) and ungentlemanly by telling him that he does conform to her misinformed stereotypes about greasers finding humour in his method when where he was from this would've been a normal occurrence around other greaser girls.
