Answer:

29 freshmen

Explanation:

Freshmen = 16 + x

Sophomores = x

Equate the number of freshmen(16 + x ) and the number of sophomores( x ) to 42( the total number of students in the class)

(16 + x ) + x = 42

16 + 2x = 42

2x = 42 - 16

2x / 2 = 26/2

x = 13

Therefore, the number of freshmen

= 16 + x

= 16 + 13

= 29

Answer: There are 29 freshman in the class

Explanation:

Sophmore = x

Freshman = x+16

x + (x + 16) = 42

x + x + 16 = 42

2x + 16 = 42

2x = 26

x = 13

Sophmore = x = 13

Freshman = x + 16 = 29
