When does a cell need to use energy to transport a
molecule across the plasma membrane?

Facilitated diffusion is the process when substances that can't pass through the membrane pass through special channels in the membrane according to their concentration gradients, without the use of energy. Active transport, however, moves substances from one compartment to the other by using the energy stored in ATP.
