Peyton Farquhar was dead; his broken-necked body hung gently from side to side beneath the Owl Creek Bridge's timbers. The revelation that the majority of part three was only a vision that Farquhar was visualizing shortly before he wrote this final sentence was a surprising twist ending that caught the readers off guard.
