Answer: x = 4, y = 6

Explanation:

2x = y + 2 (1)

-x + 3y = 14 (2)

From (2):

x - 3y = -14

x = 3y - 14

Plug it into (1):

2(3y - 14) = y + 2

6y - 28 = y + 2

5y = 30

y = 6

Plug it back in again:

x = 3(6) - 14

x = 18 - 14

x = 4
